Choosing your Mossman Gorge walk
Access update, 3 November 2026: A park notice dated 30 October announces closure of the Rainforest Circuit from 9 November to 15 December 2026 for track improvements. The day-use area, Lower river track, Baral Marrjanga and Rex Creek bridge track, including the bridge, are intended to remain accessible. Works or weather may extend the closure; follow signs and stay out of closed sections.
A Mossman Gorge walk brings you into the rainforest of Daintree National Park on Eastern Kuku Yalanji Country. Granite boulders shape the river scenery, while the public tracks offer different levels of effort. Choose by surface and accessibility as well as distance. A short river view and a longer forest route are different outings, especially when maintenance affects the circuit.
Independent walking, a cultural walk and an organised rainforest day each give the visit a different focus. Use the shuttle and access guide to plan arrival, and the cultural walks guide for locally guided experiences on private paths.

Guided rainforest outings
The river drift adds a safety-trained guide and equipment to a rainforest walk. The day trips combine rainforest with a Daintree River cruise and lunch.

A guided Mossman walk, a rainforest day with regional stops or a River Drift day with safety equipment offer different ways to visit.
Public trails, distances and accessibility
Baral Marrjanga is the accessible starting choice: the published return distance is 660 m, with a walking allowance of 30 minutes and a Grade 1 classification. The boardwalk is wheelchair accessible. Accessibility also extends to the Centre, shuttle, day-use area and toilets, with assistance potentially needed in the day-use area. That does not describe every forest trail.
Lower river track is 640 m return, with 40 minutes allowed and a Grade 2 classification. Parts can be slippery, and this track is not wheelchair accessible. Local flooding or maintenance can affect access. Its riverside outlook is a reason to stop and observe from the path, rather than to descend into the water.
Rex Creek bridge track links Baral Marrjanga with the suspension bridge. QPWS lists 1.4 km return, one hour and Grade 2. Beyond the bridge, the Rainforest Circuit explores more forest; its published circuit distance is 3.4 km, with two hours allowed and Grade 3. These route figures overlap, so do not add them into a total itinerary. During the announced closure, choose from the accessible sections instead of planning the circuit.
Guided days: what changes with the experience
The River Drift day includes return transfers from Port Douglas or Mossman, a welcome ceremony at the Gorge, a guided rainforest walk, lunch and snacks. A safety-trained river guide and safety equipment accompany the River Drift activity. Walking poles and a backpack are available if required, and a water bottle is included for the walk. This is an organised river activity alongside the rainforest visit.
A rainforest day with a guided Mossman walk also includes a tropical lunch, regional lookout and beach stops, ice cream and a wildlife-spotting river cruise. The small-group rainforest itinerary includes national park fees, a ferry crossing, a driver-guide, morning tea and lunch, together with entry to Noah Valley. Its private rainforest retreat is a place visited, rather than a promise of private guiding in Mossman. For wider day-trip choices, see Mossman Gorge tours.
Mossman Gorge swimming and River Drift
QPWS recommends not entering the water. River levels, current, depth and submerged rocks are unpredictable, and serious injuries and deaths have occurred. Do not jump or dive. A quiet-looking pool is not a safety assessment, and flooding can occur even when it is not raining where you stand.
A guided River Drift experience has its own safety-trained guide and equipment; those inclusions are not permission to swim independently. Plan your self-guided visit around the paths and river views. If you are looking for marine snorkelling, explore Great Barrier Reef trips as a separate outing.
Wildlife along the paths
Along Lower river track, butterflies, jungle perch and saw-shelled turtles are possibilities rather than promised sightings. Watch from the path without disturbing animals or entering the river for a closer view. Keep food and food scraps with you and take all rubbish away.
If a cassowary approaches, retreat slowly and use a tree or backpack as a barrier if necessary. Do not approach or feed adults or chicks. Avoid touching vegetation beside the track: stinging trees have heart-shaped, toothed leaves. A guide can add explanation, but wildlife remains unpredictable and the marked route still matters.
Questions about your visit
Which walk suits a wheelchair user?
Baral Marrjanga is wheelchair accessible. Lower river track is not; choose the boardwalk rather than assuming all routes have the same surface.
Will the bridge close with the circuit?
The notice dated 30 October 2026 says the Rex Creek bridge track and bridge should remain accessible during the announced circuit works. Follow local signs and any later warnings.
Is a cultural guide needed for the public trails?
Public tracks can be explored independently. Ngadiku cultural walks use private paths and require advance booking; they are a separate experience.
